Pre-k 4 & Wraparound Class ( Adele Leeds )

This week we’ll review letters D, E and F and make dandelions, earthworms, electricity and foxes! We’ll review beginning sounds, practice letter formation and do letter puzzles/ searches.

We’ll finish our Mother’s Day projects and gifts. The children are proud of their art work and eager to share it!

We’ll make a “rainbow in a jar”! In a clear mason jar we’ll carefully layer honey, light corn syrup, dish soap, olive oil, rubbing alcohol, water and food coloring. Using a variety of fruits we’ll make an “edible rainbow” to share with our friends!

Math lessons will include an odd/even activity numbers 1-30 and we’ll use Micky Mouse to help solve addition and subtraction equations!

THEME-  seeds, sprouts and growing

ENGLISH- recap alphabet and sounds. Identify some/ all of the letters in their names

MATHS- introduce different ways to tell the time – days,weeks months, day, night,etc

STORIES:

NURSERY RHYMES/ SONGS – “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, how does your garden grow?”

CIRCLE TIME ACTIVITIES:

  • number math -counting to 20 , recognizing numbers 11 to 20 . 
  • Days of the week. Months of the year. Seasons – talk about the 4 seasons (time)
  •  We will read at least one story each day

HEALTH SKILLS – Sugars in diet and trying new foods/helping make better food choices.  

ART AND CRAFT:  

  • Plant variety seeds and observe growth over coming weeks.
  • Put carrot tops in water
  • Grow beans in a zip lock bag and note changes
  • Paint variety of flowers  and label parts ( roots, shoots, leaves. flowers)
  • Make Mother’s Day gifts and card
  • Use coffee filter papers to make flowers

Pre-k 2 Class (Chrissy Sunberg)

This week we will finish up the alphabet with the letter Z.  We will create  a Zebra with paper and glue.

We are going to create paper tube parrots in honor of earth day last week and we are going to explore circle painting, while we use or recycled paper tubes. Again, it is a simple way to introduce toddlers to paint.  The paper tube fits easily in their small hands and it adds some distance between the paint and the hands. While some of our pre-k two’s love paint others rather use crayons but I do try to encourage using paint.

The class is going to get dirty while we attempt to garden. We will decorate plant holders and plant some seeds.

The books we will be reading are:

  • The Carrot Seed

 

Earth Day, Every Day

PreK 4/ Wraparound (Adele Leeds)

On Monday in PreK Cafe we’ll make edible and nutritious nests and chicks( pretzels, Kix, pineapple, raisins and orange peppers ). We are reading stories and learning about all our different animal friends ( feathered and furry and swimming and flying!). We’ll make colorful booklets and learn about different animal homes and habitats.

We’ll use seeds and potting soil to create our window garden. We’ll tend to it over the next few weeks and look forward to sending home special flowering gifts.

April 22 is Earth Day. We’ll talk about protecting and caring for (and enjoying!) our world. We’ll read Earth Day, Every Day (Lisa Bullard) and  The Earth Book ( Todd Parr) and and have circle time activities/lessons on recycling and keeping the earth clean.

With green frogs and lily pads we’ll play number recognition (1-20) and alphabet/ letter identification. 

This month’s Bible verse is Luke 6:31 “do unto others as you would have them do to you.” The children know it and we talk about it’s meaning and importance each day at circle time.

PreK 2 Class ( Chrissy Sunberg)

in the 2’s class we will continue to learn all about the letter x and I will introduce the letter y to the class as well. We are going to continue to make crafts with paper, glue and cupcake liners.  The theme for the week is caring for our world/life cycles. We will discuss what it means to recycle and create a project using recycled goods. 

The class will continue to practice sitting during circle time. We will continue to review and sing our days of the week song, the  months song and learn the basics of a calendar while counting to 30.  Most importantly we will go outside everyday and play nicely with our friends.

Prek 4 Class (Adele Leeds)

This week we’ll review letters A, B and C practicing letter formation ( lowercase / uppercase ), beginning sounds and identifying A, B and C words. We’ll practice writing numbers 1-10 and 11, 12 and 13.

To celebrate Spring we’ll have literacy lessons and learn about spring babies! We’ll use vocabulary to complete sentences and learn the names of animal babies ( kid/goat, kitten/ cat etc.). We’ll read Does A Kangaroo Have a Mother Too? ( Eric Carle ) to connect our lesson to literature. We’ll also use mom/ baby names for a lesson in matching ending sounds. As a group we’ll listen to the ending sounds in cat/kitten etc. and identify and match words with the same ending sounds.

Using Spring vocabulary ( flower, puddle, caterpillar etc.) we’ll have a group activity on syllables. Ask your children how we counted syllables by shaking eggs! (plastic eggs filled with with rice).

At circle time we’ll make charts and graphs as we talk and learn about daytime/nighttime, Am /PM and the activities we have for different times of the day.

We’ll make a life cycle of a frog and continue to discover the new life ( buds, flowers, spring babies) that Spring brings each year! Wake Up It’s Spring ( Lisa Campbell Ernst ) is a delightful spring story I’ll share with the children.

This week we will be learning about the letter X x. We will create a colorful xylophone using paper and glue, which is 2 of the two’s favorite art materials. 

The theme of the week is furry & feathered friends. We will learn about what some animals do after they come out of hibernation. 

We will look at different pictures of birds and discuss similarities and differences. We will create a bird craft using a few different art materials, which will  include paper, paint, feathers and pom poms.

We will learn about the life cycle of a chicken and read many books about our fun furry friends.

Spring Flower Gardens

Prek 4 Class ( Adele Leeds)

Y and Z are this week’s letters. We’ll make yaks and zebras and use yellow yarn ( rulers and yardsticks too) for a lesson on measurement.

To celebrate spring we’ll create spring flower gardens using sticky dots and hole reinforcers( good for fine motor strength) and crayons to add petals,stems and leaves! 

Using thumbprints and handprints we’ll show the growth of a tulip: bulb, roots, stem, bud and bloom!

We’ll read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? (Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle) and do a counting and sorting math activity. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar ( Eric Carle ) we’ll make edible caterpillars with cucumbers and grapes!

Our science lesson will introduce the children to the water cycle with a simple condensation experiment.

  • Make a collage of things we are thankful for
  • Make a VASE of paper flowers on a letter V
  • Make a hand print VOLCANO 
  • Cut out several paper hands and stick a different textured material on each hand
  • Use a paper towel tube and dried beans to make a shaker

Spring has Finally Sprung!! This week we will be learning about the letter W.  In honor of Spring our group will make worm crafts with pipe cleaners and sticks. 

We will also make bird feeders so we can welcome all the birds back to NJ. We will have watermelon and do a watermelon craft too. The them for this week is characteristic of water.

We are going to discuss the importance of water. 

As always, we will practice sitting in a circle and listening to our teachers during circle time and not speaking while others are. 

We will also practice keeping our hands to ourselves.
