The Fall: Orange, Red, Yellow and Brown

F is the letter of the week. We’ll take a nature walk and look for signs of Fall: orange, red, yellow and brown leaves, acorns and the squirrels and chipmunks collecting them.

We’ll be busy at project time making flags, fish( with our handprints ), frogs and the faces of our families.

We’ll practice writing Fs, 4s and 5s and use goldfish for a math counting/ addition activity.

To challenge the childrens’ visual observation skills and introduce the concept of symmetry, I’ll give each child a paper with one half of a jack-o-lantern  face and ask the child to complete the picture by drawing the missing parts of the face to match the other side.

Ask your child to do the “Five Little Pumpkins” poem and finger play. We’ll be practicing it at circle time!

The children are working so well in their workbooks and on their worksheets!

THEME – Leaves, trees and pumpkins

This week each child will be encouraged to join in and participate during singing, story time and circle time. They will also be encouraged to play with each other in a kind and respectful manner.

ENGLISH- Letter “G” and its sound, naming as many “G” words as we can.

MATH – We will be continuing to practice counting 1-10 and putting the numbers in order. Writing numbers 1 to 5. pointing to each object as we count- idea of one to one correspondence. we will review days of the week.

STORY-“The three Billy Goats Gruff” by Paul Galdone

CIRCLE TIME ACTIVITIES-  “G” words, color recognition, shape recognition ( especially triangle, square and rectangle) – number math and days of the week. We will read at least one story each day.

ART AND CRAFT PROJECTS:

  • Make a GARDEN with 3 GOATS eating GREEN GRASS
  • “G” collage
  • Leaves, trees and pumpkin picture,counting objects in our picture.

Lesson on Clean Hands

At circle time we are learning and reviewing with name cards our names and our friends’ names! We are practicing waiting our turn to answer questions and encouraging and complimenting our friends as they share at circle time.

We’ll use talcum powder (germs!!) for a lesson on clean hands. We’ll coat our hands with powder, touch all sorts of things and toys and each other’s hands to pass the “germs.” We’ll see how quickly and easily germs can spread and how hand washing is so important to health and cleanliness!!

E is this week’s letter. We’ll practice 11s and 10s and uppercase and lowercase Es. Please ask your child for E words! We’ll make elephant Es and create elephant habitats ( savannah ).

We’ll read Machines Push and Pull by Linda Ward Beech and explore pushes  and pulls, ways that objects move and how magnets move objects.

Look for our “spider books “– life cycle of a spider and our ” handy corn ” art project! 

We’ll use “spiders” and candy corn for math counting, sorting and graphing.

We’ll read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Messy and Little Miss Naughty.

THEME – Fall activities and how to stay active to keep our bodies healthy

This week we will  continue to develop our  listening skills and our ability to sit still when appropriate. We will  continue to practice taking turns through various games and activities.

ENGLISH-We are working on letter “F”  and its sound, naming as many “F” words as we can.
Letter formation and beginning sounds will be carried on this week.

The children are practicing holding their crayons correctly and strengthening crayon grip.
Song: “Old MacDonald had a FARM ”

MATH

  • counting 1-10
  • practicing writing number 5 and using a number line. Make a FIVE collage
  • Review the days of the week, the 4 seasons, “October ” and shapes

CIRCLE TIME ACTIVITIES

  • “F” words. We will review, colors and the alphabet. We will read at least one story each day.
  • We are also learning to recognize our own names.

HEALTH SKILLS – Discuss how we can stay healthy, using flash card game

We’ll review A, B and C this week and continue working on letter formation and beginning sounds.

At circle time we’ll have lessons and activities  on positional words and measurement. Look for our measurement mini books. 

We’ll make weather wheels that the children can use at home to mark each day’s weather!

I’ll fill a “sensory sock” with items that the children will identify by touch alone.

We’ll read ” In 1492 ” by Jean Marzollo  ( the story is told in simple rhyme ) and talk about  Christopher Colombus and his bravery and explorations. We’ll make Ninas , Pintas and Santa Marias  and learn how explorers used the stars to help them find their way! 

After we read ” Sixteen Runaway Pumpkins ”  by Dianne Ochiltree  we’ll use paint and thumbprints to do a pumpkin vine math activity. 

We’ve been reading Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Men and Little Miss books. The children love the stories ( each story has an age-appropriate  moral lesson conveyed with humor and tenderness). Ask your children about Mr. Brave and Little Miss Somersault!

We’ll read Mr. Happy this week.
