Prek 4 Class & Wraparound (Adele Leeds)

This week we’ll review letters P, Q and R and introduce the letter S. We’ll practice writing S and numbers 6 and 7. To strengthen math and spatial awareness skills the children will use sugar cubes to build simple structures.

Art/craft projects will include making snowmen, starry night scenes and collages using squares of different colors and patterns.

At circle time, I’ll place a length of cotton batting on the floor (snow) and the children using toy vehicles, people, animals, buildings and cotton balls will create a snowy winter scene!

Using cinnamon, lemon, orange, garlic, mint, coffee, chocolate and perfume, I’ll challenge the children to test their sense of smell as they try and identify these scents!

We will do quarter crayon rubbings and Q tip paintings. 

Towards the end of the week the two’s will make a Q collage.

We will try writing the letter Q with shaving cream and paper

We are going to review and practice sharing, taking turns and listening in our classroom and during free play. 

We are going to learn a new song with many Q’s in it. Please ask your children to sing it.

George Washington and Abraham Lincoln Stories

Prek 4 Class and Wraparound ( Adele Leeds )

We’ll learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln with stories and poems and we’ll create our own presidential “portraits.”

We’ll make rain forests and rhinos, practice the R sound and uppercase and lowercase letter formation and identify and learn as many R words as we can!

We’ll use raisins to play uppercase and lowercase letter match Bingo and heart-shaped valentine candies for a math sorting, counting and graphing activity.

At story time I’ll read Caps for Sale ( without showing the children the cover ) and then encourage the children to create their own book covers which challenges them to recall  story details, characters, setting and plot!

Our science lesson will be a ” strength test.” We’ll use printer paper, tissue paper, aluminum foil and wax paper to see how strong these materials are (i.e. how many marbles can each hold before it tears). This simple activity encourages estimating, predicting and counting.

We continue to practice writing our names with uppercase and lowercase letters and this week we’ll practice writing letters 8, 9 and 10.

Prek 2 Class (Chrissy Sunberg )

This week we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in the Pre-k 2’s class. We are going to focus on sharing and taking turns with our classmates. We will practice measuring different types of red liquids to see which cup has less or more liquid in it.  We are going to learn and review numbers 10-20. 

Are group is going to learn all about letter P by making a paper penguin and writing the letter p on paper.  We are going to decorate picture frames. We are going to learn some new children’s songs and add them to our music box for circle time. We will continue playing different gross motor games to keep us active indoors.

Prek 4 and Wraparound Class (Adele Leeds)

This week’s letter is Q. We’ll make letter Q quilts using fabric squares. I’ll show the children quilts and we’ll talk about texture, design, decoration and their practical use ( especially warmth in winter)!

We’ll make queens with jeweled crowns, using the jewels first for a math sorting and counting activity. We’ll use Qtips for painting a winter snow scene and review shapes by creating them with Qtips of different sizes.

To review and match uppercase and lowercase letters we’ll use fruit loops and make a colorful quilt.

I’ll make a question box  and the children will choose questions about family, friends,school, numbers,letters, weather etc.to challenge their practical and creative thinking!

We’ll talk about keeping ourselves ( mind and body) healthy with nutritious food and lots of exercise and helping our family and friends to be healthy as well.

This week the Pre-k 2’s will be focusing on the letter O. We will make owls using  different paper shapes, paint with an orange and practice writing the letter O on paper. We will continue practicing numbers 6-12 by playing math games using heart manipulatives. 

The theme for this month is “Healthy Hearts and Holidays.”  We are going to marble paint on a heart using a variety of paint colors. The pre-k 2’s will learn about the meaning of Valentines Day.  We will learn some easy yoga positions to keep our bodies moving and relaxed during the cold winter month of February.  We are going to act out the book called, The Barnyard Dance. This oldie but goodie keeps the kids attention and keeps them moving as well.

PreK 4 and Wraparound Class (Adele Leeds)

We’ll make peacocks, penguins and pizzas as we learn and practice the P sound. Please practice the P sound with your children and challenge them to identify P words.

Using our number line  we’ll review numbers1-15 (recognition and order) and use peanuts, popcorn and pretzels for sorting and graphing.

At circle time each morning we review name cards, days of the week, months of the year, the seasons and the day’s weather!

A lesson/activity on positional words will help the children with organizational and placement skills. Please review above/below, in/out, on/off, over/under, between and next to with your children.

To encourage phonological awareness, we’ll have lessons on syllables. The children will hear 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 syllable words and use their hands  and connecting cubes to “clap” the syllables. We have fun “clapping” our names (first and last)!!

We’ll have fun playing a rhyming version of I Spy that will stretch the childrens’ listening and observation skills.

Ask your children about our edible octopus! We had so much fun and skill building ( math and  language !) and we loved the peppers and hummus.

This week we will create a winter night sky using different shapes and white paint while learning about the letter N. The class will learn and practice writing the letter n while using a paint bag. We will name items that start with the letter N.

The class will review numbers 6-10 by counting and adding items to our cool snowman we plan on creating! We are going to tear pieces of tissue paper and place them on contact paper. Tearing any type of paper will strengthen your child’s fingers and hands, which will prepare them for writing with a pencil. We will name animals that can live in cold climates.

We’ll review letters M,N and O, practice our letter formation and continue writing our names with upper and lower case letters.

At circle time we’ll talk about winter weather and how we dress to keep ourselves warm! We’ll learn about hibernating animals and how they prepare for and thrive in winter.

Science activities will include experiments about solids and liquids (what happens when a variety of items are placed in water) and bouncing ( what items bounce and why!).

We’ll use M and M s, peanuts and oranges to learn about graphing. 

As a treat we’ll make and snack on edible snowmen!

This week we will have a Phonics Review for the letters J-M by doing picture sorting, writing and initial sound matching. I want to continue reading and exploring The Mitten.  I have so many neat crafts and learning manipulatives that relate to The Mitten. Some projects we plan on doing are sorting paper mittens from smallest to largest and matching mittens with the correct number.  

This week we are going to talk about hibernation and read stories about the animals that hibernate in the winter. 

We will start an early valentines day project to hang on the main bulletin board as well.

With Christmas lights, we’ll do a sorting and patterning activity and using colorful pompoms and our number skills we’ll decorate a Christmas tree

Pre-k 4 Class

We’ll begin to practice writing our names with uppercase and lowercase letters. To help the children with uc and lc letter identification we’ll play a letter matching game using holiday decorations.

In a baking sheet filled with dry potato flakes (snow),I’ll hide number cards. The children will search for and identify numbers 1-15. We’ll practice number formation in the “snow.”

Using dice, we’ll practice one-to-one correspondence and making sets as we fill snowflakes with frosted Cheerios. This math activity is also a quick snack!

At circle time, we’ll read The First Day of Winter by Denise Fleming, practice our Bible verses and talk about the meaning of the Christmas season.

We’ll review the letter L and introduce M, making mangers, mice and magnets! We’ll experiment with magnets and have a simple science lesson on melting ice/snow with salt!

Prek-3 Class

Theme – To explore the role of giving and sharing

This week each child will be encouraged to join in with the Christmas songs we are rehearsing They will also be encouraged to share whatever they are playing with and ask nicely for whatever they want to play with.

English– Letter “M” and its sound, naming as many “M” words as we can.- some related to Christmas- MARY, MYRRH, MANGER, wise MEN

Math –  We will be continuing to develop our estimating skills through games and activities. We will read “Anno’s counting book” by M Anno.We will discuss the items on each page and talk about MORE and LESS.

Prek-2 Class

The pre-k two’s have an exciting week of fun activities as we wrap up our 5 senses. This week we will learn about the sense of taste and explore the tastes of Christmas. We will sample candy canes, chocolates and marshmallows. The 2’s favorite smell from last week was Chocolate. I was the only one who disagreed and voted for cinnamon sticks.

We will learn about the letter J,create a Jesus craft and make a craft using jingle bells. We are going to paint our gingerbread men ornaments and make another Christmas Tree using all different color and sizes of construction paper. Wait until you see the Christmas Trees your children will be bringing home this week, they are adorable. 

The books we will be reading and exploring are J Is for…., Little Tree and The Gingerbread Man. 

We have a new sensory table in the classroom filled with cotton balls, letters and numbers. Ask your children about it. They can spend at least an hour exploring in it.

This week we will continue practicing for our Christmas program, learning our songs and  their motions and Bible verses.

L is this week’s letter and we’ll make ladybugs, lions and lighthouses, practice letter formation and the L sound and identify L words

We’ll use Legos for counting and sorting and also for making colorful art projects!

Beginning this week we will chart December’s weather, observing and charting temperature, rain/snowfall and sunrise and sunset times!

PreK 4 and Wraparound Class

In this short week we’ll continue working on the letter K. Please practice the K sound with your children and challenge them to name K words ( king, kitten, koala, kite, kangaroo etc.).

We’ll talk about harvest and gratitude and we’ll read stories about the first Thanksgiving. We’ll make a “thankful tree,” turkey hats and our own Mayflowers! Happy Thanksgiving!

PreK 2 Class 

As the weather gets colder and we are approaching the end of November, Thanksgiving is on my mind. This week we are going to focus on being kind and sharing. We are going to pretend to get on the Mayflower and discuss the first Thanksgiving when the Pilgrims and the Native  Americans sat down and shared a meal. 

We started practicing for the Christmas show. The pre-k 2’s will be singing We Wish You A Merry Christmas! This week I will send a copy of the lyrics home with your child. 

We are going to make Thanksgiving Day crafts and learn about the letter H. We will learn about the sense of hearing. Make sure to ask your kiddos about all the fun and wonderful things that are going on at school.

In circle time this week we’ll review days of the week, months of the year, seasons and weather( its’ changes and how the changes affect what we wear, do and eat!),

The children continue to recognize and learn the spelling of their names and their friends’ names as we review name cards each day. We are working on taking turns, listening to instructions and respecting and caring about our families, friends and teachers.

We’ll learn about the letter H this week and make horses, helicopters and happy faces!

At the rice table( lots of sensory fun), we’ll search for numbers, letters and shapes

Using picture/puzzle pieces we’ll do some beginning addition and subtraction problems. With candy corn, we will sort, count and graph.

With colorful leaves we’ll make beautiful fall wreaths!

This week each child will be encouraged to join in and participate during singing, story time and circle time. They will also be encouraged to play with each other in a kind and respectful manner.

English – Letter “H” and its sound, naming as many “H” words as we can.
We are learning song- ” If you’re HAPPY and you know it”

Math –  We will be continuing to practice counting 1-10 and putting the numbers in order.

Play game – missing number. Writing numbers 1 to 5. pointing to each object as we count- idea of one to one correspondence Collecting objects to match number : eg give me 5 yellow bears, 4 red bears, etc.

We will be trying to recall the name of the day of the week and learning that there are 7 days in one week.

Prek-2 Class

This week the pre-k two’s class will be exploring the letter F for Fall. We are going to have fun outside with nature and pick out some beautiful fallen leaves for one of our fall projects. We are going to paint with a feather too.   

I would like to expose your little ones to homemade finger paint , which we will make together.  Have you heard about our sensory table? It is filled with artificial leaves, cinnamon scented pine cones, gourds, hay and little letters. It is a great new addition to our room and your children love spending time with their tiny hands in the table exploring. 

We will start exploring our 5 senses! Our first sense we will explore is sense of sight! I hope to do this outside, if Mother Nature cooperates. Stay tuned!
