Prek 4 Class ( Adele Leeds)

Y and Z are this week’s letters. We’ll make yaks and zebras and use yellow yarn ( rulers and yardsticks too) for a lesson on measurement.

To celebrate spring we’ll create spring flower gardens using sticky dots and hole reinforcers( good for fine motor strength) and crayons to add petals,stems and leaves! 

Using thumbprints and handprints we’ll show the growth of a tulip: bulb, roots, stem, bud and bloom!

We’ll read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? (Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carle) and do a counting and sorting math activity. After reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar ( Eric Carle ) we’ll make edible caterpillars with cucumbers and grapes!

Our science lesson will introduce the children to the water cycle with a simple condensation experiment.

Spring has Finally Sprung!! This week we will be learning about the letter W.  In honor of Spring our group will make worm crafts with pipe cleaners and sticks. 

We will also make bird feeders so we can welcome all the birds back to NJ. We will have watermelon and do a watermelon craft too. The them for this week is characteristic of water.

We are going to discuss the importance of water. 

As always, we will practice sitting in a circle and listening to our teachers during circle time and not speaking while others are. 

We will also practice keeping our hands to ourselves.

Prek 4 Class

This week we’ll have two activities to strengthen fine motor skills. We’ll use clip clothespins and colorful pompous (bunny tails) and pass the pompom around the circle, each child using his clip/pin to pass the pompom to his neighbor.

I’ll fill our sensory table with “grass” and hide Easter egg halves and lots of plastic numbers and letters. The children will  match and fill the eggs, count the number of eggs they collect and identify their contents.

X is this week’s letter and we’ll make xylophones and X-rays of our hands. We’ll identify as many X words as we can ( not easy!!) and practice writing Xs Ys and Zs and numbers  6, 8 and 9.

Ask your children about our science experiment: ” useful friction.” Friction helps your hands hold objects, makes them warm when you rub them together and makes car tires heat up and grip the road surface!

We’ll celebrate the Easter/Spring season with stories and poems that share and explain the gifts of rebirth and renewal.

Exploring the Five Senses

We’ll continue learning about the five senses exploring textures,tastes and sounds.We’ll do a “blind taste test”(lemon,orange, chocolate,vanilla,banana etc).

We have been talking about healthy habits(good rest and exercise) and healthy foods( nutrients,vitamins and minerals) and this week we’ll make an edible food pyramid! We’ll prepare a healthy buffet ( fruits and vegetables) to share with our friends at snack time!

This month’s scripture verse is Philippians 4:13 — I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. We practice it each day at circle time and talk about faith and 

kindness and caring for our families and friends. With “whale crackers” we’ll sort, count and graph and do some simple math equations. We’ll make wagons, watermelons and weather wheels ( concentrating on the change from winter to spring)!

We’ll read Whistle for Willie ( Ezra Jack Keats).

U for Unicycle

Prek 4 Class

We’ll review letters T and U and finish our U projects (unicycles and underwater scenes).

We’ll learn about volcanoes ( we’ll watch a volcano erupt!) and violins and make vegetable soup( talking also about healthy foods and healthy bodies and different  textures and tastes).

We’ll use several pasta shapes and muffin tins for a math counting and sorting activity.

Phonics lessons will include making rhyming puzzles and a small booklet of rhyming cards.

To practice beginning sounds, we’ll make a sound stew! I’ll put objects one at a time in the pot and encourage the children( taking turns) to add “ingredients” with the same beginning sound until we have a full pot!

Using cereal boxes as game boards we’ll play letter identification lotto/ bingo with the children identifying and marking the letters on their cereal box/ boards as I draw and display the letters. This activity ( one we will repeat) encourages the children to look for and find letters and numbers on all sorts of printed material!

Look for our V art projects: flower-filled vases and volcanoes!

This week we’ll celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday!  We’ll read Green Eggs and Ham, Oh The Places We’ll Go, Hop on Pop and Dr Seuss’s ABCs. We’ll make hats both edible( strawberries and bananas) and decorative/wearable!!

This week’s letter is U. We’ll make colorful umbrellas and unicycles and learn about and create an underwater environment. We’ll practice making uppercase and lowercase Us and numbers 11, 12 and 13. 

We’ll practice counting numbers10-20  and play Uno to strengthen math and language skills.

We’ll learn about and create  our universe ( stars, sun, planets and galaxies). Our galaxy ( the Milky Way) is huge with over 200 billion stars! Our fastest airplane would have to travel for a million trillion years to fly across it!

This week we are learning about the letter S. We are going to make a snake (letter S) using clay, paint and sequins. This project will really challenge their little fingers. We are going to decorate a letter Ss with stars and we are going to make a collage full of Squares for the letter S.

This week’s letter is T. We’ll have lessons on transportation (trains, cars, planes, boats, roads and waterways), telling time and textures ( using our sense of touch to explore many different textures and materials).

We’ll have a tea party ( decaf peppermint tea and biscuits!!) and  practice our table manners!

We’ll practice counting by twos and writing numbers two and ten.

We’ll make tigers and tractors and for a special treat we’ll create edible palm trees ( wafer cookies, apples and grapes)!

Keeping up with the February theme “Healthy Heart” The kiddos will play a Move and Grove- gross motor alphabet game by moving around while a fun upbeat song plays. They will locate upper case and lower case letters that are printed on card stock and taped to the floor.  Another big hit we have been doing in class and will continue during the cold months is freeze dance.

This week we’ll review letters P, Q and R and introduce the letter S. We’ll practice writing S and numbers 6 and 7. To strengthen math and spatial awareness skills the children will use sugar cubes to build simple structures.

Art/craft projects will include making snowmen, starry night scenes and collages using squares of different colors and patterns.

At circle time, I’ll place a length of cotton batting on the floor (snow) and the children using toy vehicles, people, animals, buildings and cotton balls will create a snowy winter scene!

Using cinnamon, lemon, orange, garlic, mint, coffee, chocolate and perfume, I’ll challenge the children to test their sense of smell as they try and identify these scents!

George Washington and Abraham Lincoln Stories

Prek 4 Class and Wraparound ( Adele Leeds )

We’ll learn about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln with stories and poems and we’ll create our own presidential “portraits.”

We’ll make rain forests and rhinos, practice the R sound and uppercase and lowercase letter formation and identify and learn as many R words as we can!

We’ll use raisins to play uppercase and lowercase letter match Bingo and heart-shaped valentine candies for a math sorting, counting and graphing activity.

At story time I’ll read Caps for Sale ( without showing the children the cover ) and then encourage the children to create their own book covers which challenges them to recall  story details, characters, setting and plot!

Our science lesson will be a ” strength test.” We’ll use printer paper, tissue paper, aluminum foil and wax paper to see how strong these materials are (i.e. how many marbles can each hold before it tears). This simple activity encourages estimating, predicting and counting.

We continue to practice writing our names with uppercase and lowercase letters and this week we’ll practice writing letters 8, 9 and 10.

This week we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in the Pre-k 2’s class. We are going to focus on sharing and taking turns with our classmates. We will practice measuring different types of red liquids to see which cup has less or more liquid in it.  We are going to learn and review numbers 10-20. 

Are group is going to learn all about letter P by making a paper penguin and writing the letter p on paper.  We are going to decorate picture frames. We are going to learn some new children’s songs and add them to our music box for circle time. We will continue playing different gross motor games to keep us active indoors.

Prek 4 and Wraparound Class (Adele Leeds)

This week’s letter is Q. We’ll make letter Q quilts using fabric squares. I’ll show the children quilts and we’ll talk about texture, design, decoration and their practical use ( especially warmth in winter)!

We’ll make queens with jeweled crowns, using the jewels first for a math sorting and counting activity. We’ll use Qtips for painting a winter snow scene and review shapes by creating them with Qtips of different sizes.

To review and match uppercase and lowercase letters we’ll use fruit loops and make a colorful quilt.

I’ll make a question box  and the children will choose questions about family, friends,school, numbers,letters, weather etc.to challenge their practical and creative thinking!

We’ll talk about keeping ourselves ( mind and body) healthy with nutritious food and lots of exercise and helping our family and friends to be healthy as well.

This week the Pre-k 2’s will be focusing on the letter O. We will make owls using  different paper shapes, paint with an orange and practice writing the letter O on paper. We will continue practicing numbers 6-12 by playing math games using heart manipulatives. 

The theme for this month is “Healthy Hearts and Holidays.”  We are going to marble paint on a heart using a variety of paint colors. The pre-k 2’s will learn about the meaning of Valentines Day.  We will learn some easy yoga positions to keep our bodies moving and relaxed during the cold winter month of February.  We are going to act out the book called, The Barnyard Dance. This oldie but goodie keeps the kids attention and keeps them moving as well.

Using our number line  we’ll review numbers1-15 (recognition and order) and use peanuts, popcorn and pretzels for sorting and graphing.

At circle time each morning we review name cards, days of the week, months of the year, the seasons and the day’s weather!

A lesson/activity on positional words will help the children with organizational and placement skills. Please review above/below, in/out, on/off, over/under, between and next to with your children.

To encourage phonological awareness, we’ll have lessons on syllables. The children will hear 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 syllable words and use their hands  and connecting cubes to “clap” the syllables. We have fun “clapping” our names (first and last)!!

We’ll have fun playing a rhyming version of I Spy that will stretch the childrens’ listening and observation skills.

Ask your children about our edible octopus! We had so much fun and skill building ( math and  language !) and we loved the peppers and hummus.

Prek 2 Class (Chrissy Sunberg)

This week we will create a winter night sky using different shapes and white paint while learning about the letter N. The class will learn and practice writing the letter n while using a paint bag. We will name items that start with the letter N.

The class will review numbers 6-10 by counting and adding items to our cool snowman we plan on creating! We are going to tear pieces of tissue paper and place them on contact paper. Tearing any type of paper will strengthen your child’s fingers and hands, which will prepare them for writing with a pencil. We will name animals that can live in cold climates.
